Changing the flow and function of a kitchen can easily be accomplished with the addition of custom kitchen islands.  A kitchen island can be located in the center of the kitchen if there is space or it can be attached to your existing cabinetry.  Most custom pieces are however very expensive so the key is to find a store bought unit that can pass as a custom built unit.  Kitchen island designs are constantly changing so finding a nice unit is fairly easy because manufacturers and retailers are constantly getting rid of older models to make room for new more popular styles.  In order to make a store bought island look like it was part of your original kitchen design, you many need to go with a unit that is solid colored, preferably the opposite color of your existing cabinetry color or stain.  For instance, if you have white cabinetry in your kitchen, choose a dark island or one that is colored in a similar shade as your trim or accent colors.

Kitchen island furniture can be purchased at various outlets including the internet.  Check the internet for the latest styles but also check for what is on sale or clearance.  Items on sale and clearance don’t necessarily have anything wrong with them.  Some may have minor damage that can easily be mixed but most are simply on sale because the retailer needs room for newer models.  A kitchen island design may have lost popularity but that doesn’t mean it won’t work in your kitchen.  In fact, it will probably work better for an older style kitchen.

The important thing to remember when shopping for custom or already made kitchen islands is that the purpose of the island is to add more function in your kitchen space.  The new island must resolve some of your function issues in the kitchen.  For instance, the new island should contain either storage, an extra sink, a second range, or space for stools to create another eating and entertaining surface.  Take advantage of the extra surface and storage area to show off your red kitchen items and accessories. Islands can accommodate more than one function so try to get as much out of your new furniture addition as possible.
