Outdoor Patio Lights of All Shapes and Sizes

by CJ Eason

Outdoor patio lights come in an endless variety of sizes, shapes, materials, and installations.  The type and size will depend on the area and function you are trying to achieve.  For instance, if you are trying to light up a walkway then you should probably purchase a set of ground solar patio lights that can easily be installed on both sides of the walkway to provide ample illumination for walking to and from your home during the night.  Solar lights work very well for ground lighting because they operate solely on the power of the sun so you will not have to hard wire each fixture along the walkway.  Post patio lights also work well for a walkway but they require you to purchase the posts as well as the light fixture.

Patio lighting that require wiring should only be done by someone who is familiar with the process or a professional.  There are specific requirements for the installation of outdoor lights including the depth of the wiring and the type of wiring that is needed.  A professional will know the current requirements.  If you don’t want to worry about all of the wiring most electrical lights require, you can always go with patio string lights which do a good enough job for areas like a porch, railing, pergola, or trellis.  String lights are easy to install but they do need to be plugged into an electrical outlet.  There are many different types of umbrella light installations as well.  For example, patio umbrella lights are becoming more popular for outdoor entertaining.  With the proper exterior lighting and one or two patio propane heaters you can maximize your outdoor living opportunities even on cool evenings.

Before setting out for the store to purchase lights for your patio or outdoor landscape, make sure you have a good idea of the amount and type of lighting fixtures you will need.  Plan out the project on paper and determine a budget so your shopping will go smoothly and so you only get what you will need.  If needed, you can always use the internet to look at the different choices that are available and the recommended installation for each.
