Home Theater – Finishing Touches to Improve Sound, Comfort, and Style

by CJ Eason

The addition of a home theater is something most homeowners can only dream of.  If you happen to be considering or are in the process of converting a space into a home theater, there are some important finishing touches you should consider.  For instance, a small investment in insulation panels can add both decoration and better sound quality within the space.  Insulating wall and ceiling panels absorb exterior sounds and promote better sound quality from your home theater system.  Insulating panels come in many different sizes, shapes, textures, and colors.  The panels themselves can be used to add a decorative touch within the space.  Choose colors and textures that can be used in other components like furniture, flooring, and accents.

Hidden wiring can also improve the overall appearance of a home theater.  Wire channels can be installed.  Run all of the wiring through the channels but make sure they are running properly before you snap the channels shut.  Baseboards and trim can also be used to cover ceiling wires but you will definitely need to make sure the sound and video system is working.  Wiring can also be hidden by a floor treatment like carpeting or a wooden platform.  Platforms work well because lighting can be incorporated within the structure to create floor lighting.  Floor lighting is recommended for safe maneuvering within the space while a movie is on the screen.  Recessed lighting is another solution that can be installed flush to the floor regardless of the floor material.  Overhead lighting works well but it should definitely function with the help of a dimmer so illumination can be adjusted according to the preference of the occupants.

The final and most important part of finishing a home theater is the furnishings because without functional and comfortable seating, the space may never reach its full potential.  Sofas, chairs, and even ottomans must be plush and cozy.  The furniture and coffee table should also be highly tolerant of spills and frequent use.  People want a place where they can put their feet up and relax for a couple of hours during a movie.  Some people like to fall asleep so a comfortable pillow and blanket is also in order.  Choose materials that are comfortable to the touch but easy to clean and maintain.  Vacuuming and dusting should be all that is needed in the space periodically.  Stains removal solutions should easily take care of any spills and stains that come up over time.

Remodel that old basement with basement design ideas such as a theater or family room addition to add value and living space.  Improving the quality of sound, appearance, and overall comfort of a home theater room can be done with inexpensive yet very effective solutions.  It took you so long to get the room of your dreams, now it is time to finish it off so you can enjoy every minute spent within those four walls.
